For some homeowners replacement windows simply aren’t in the budget even though their current windows aren’t efficient. There are some things you can do to help lower your heating and cooling costs without buying new windows. We covered one idea in last week’s blog about window tinting film but here are a few more tips to help make your old windows more energy efficient.
Window Treatments Can Block Solar Heating
Many different types of window treatments that can help reduce your utility costs. Some drapes are what the manufacturers call “solar drapes” to reflect the sun. You’ll find that the backing is often silver or white reflective material. Some cellular shades have the same sort of backing for reflectivity. Cellular shades by their very make up also help insulate a room because of the air pockets in the shades themselves. Of course, the down side is that you’ll have to leave the curtains and shades closed anytime the sun is shining in the windows.
Proper Maintenance Makes Your Windows More Energy Efficient
So much of the heat or cold that gets into your home comes in through poorly maintained windows. Window caulk deteriorates over time, especially in the Texas sun. Caulking your windows is an inexpensive way to make it more efficient. You’ll also reap the benefit of fewer pests getting into your home. Caulking is fairly simple and requires few tools. Just make sure to remove all old caulk and add your new caulk to the joints and the window frame. You’ll want to caulk inside and out but only on a dry surface.
Replacing or adding weather stripping is another way to make your windows more energy efficient. Most home improvement stores sell self-adhesive weather stripping that can be installed in almost any window. Just be sure to check that the newly installed weather stripping isn’t catching on the frame and that the window still opens and closes properly.
