We’re often asked this question and there is no easy answer. It depends on the quality of the window itself and what your preferences are. Let’s assume that we’re comparing the same ENERGY STAR® rated window with different frame and sash materials only.

Wood

Wood is the original window material. However, it’s not often the best choice. Wood requires the most maintenance. If you don’t maintain it properly, it will have the shortest expected life. It does look great and adds to the authenticity of a historic home but isn’t the only option.

Clad or Composite Windows

These terms can be used interchangeably and as they refer to nearly the same thing. Rather than wood, we often steer people to composite windows. A clad window is a window with wood on the inside of the home but a more weather resistant material on the outside, most commonly aluminum. You get the same authentic look inside your home that can be stained or painted, yet you have less maintenance outside.

Fiberglass

Often considered the strongest of window materials, fiberglass has several benefits over other replacement window types. First, the sash frame can be smaller due to the increased strength so there is more glass for a better view. Fiberglass can also be painted making it a more flexible solution than some others that cannot be painted. Although not as expensive as a wood or wood clad window, it is more expensive than a vinyl replacement window.

Aluminum

Like fiberglass windows, aluminum windows are strong and require a smaller frame to support the glass. It’s durable and environmentally friendly. You’ll have some maintenance to avoid corrosion and if you don’t choose an insulated aluminum window frame there can be significant heat transference.

Vinyl

This is the most popular replacement window material. Depending on the manufacturer, they are available in many colors, NT Windows even offers custom color vinyl windows. They require little maintenance and are the most affordable replacement window option. The biggest downside is that the sash frames need a certain thickness to support the glass so you may lose some viewing area compared to some other options.
