As you begin your hunt for replacement windows, you may be looking at what has improved since your current windows were manufactured. The good news is, there are a lot of new replacement window options and features. Some offer energy efficiency and some aesthetics. Here are a few that you should insist upon and a few that you might want to consider.
Low-E Glass
The majority of replacement windows (and all that are ENERGY STAR® rated) have Low-E glass. If you’re not familiar with Low-E glass, it offers several benefits. First, it blocks a great deal of UV light which is responsible for the fading of furniture and carpets inside your home. Most importantly, however, it helps keep your home more comfortable in that it keeps the heat or air-conditioned air inside your home. Insist upon Low-E glass in your new windows.
Tilt-in Sash
If you’re looking at single or double-hung windows, chances are good that they will have at least one tilt-in sash. The lower sash (that moves) is often the only one that tilts in for easy cleaning. If you currently pay a window cleaner because you can’t reach the outside of the windows, a double-hung window may save you money in the long run. Tilt-in sashes are one of the most sought-after replacement window options today.
Low Maintenance
Although there’s no such thing as a no-maintenance window, if you are looking at low maintenance, consider vinyl replacement windows. They don’t need any special care, just the occasional recalking around the frame. This is why vinyl replacement windows are the most popular replacement window materials.
Window Frame Color
One of the hottest trends right now is black replacement windows. If you’re looking for a big change to your home with your new windows, choosing a black frame will do it. Some homeowners choose black for just the window’s exterior while others prefer both the interior and exterior black. Some manufacturers offer standard colors while others offer custom colors. If you have a vision for your home, ask your replacement window company about the colors they offer.
Window Grids
Window grids have two other common names; muntins and window grilles. Many homes with single and double-hung windows today have a six over six pattern. This is one of the least expensive window replacement options that can really change the appearance of your home’s exterior. If you want to change the view, consider skipping grids all together.
