Mold growth in your home is not only unsightly, but it can be dangerous. Because mold grows in damp, and often dark, places, it’s not uncommon to find it around your windows. There are several ways that mold has the moisture necessary to grow around your windows and not all of them require you to call a window replacement company. If you can figure out where the water comes from and stop it, you won’t have to deal with future growth.
Find the Water Source and Stop It
Of course, identifying where the moisture is coming from is essential. There are three main reasons. One is condensation, which we covered in last week’s blog. If you missed it, click here. Another reason is a window leak. Window leaks are often from poor maintenance. Keeping your window properly sealed with caulk is key to stopping most window leaks. We talked about replacing caulk in this blog. Surprisingly to many homeowners, window moisture is often from cracked siding or a roof leak.
Take a look at the outside of your home in the areas around the mold growth. If you notice your siding is peeling away from your home or has cracks, you may need new siding to stop the water from getting into your home. Sometimes the issue comes from further up on your home. If your roof is older or showing signs of wear, consider having your roofing contractor inspect for leaks. Water follows the path of least resistance and areas around windows are a prime place for roof leaks to show themselves.
If the siding and roofing are all sound, it may simply be that your windows are worn out. Over time older wood windows crack and split. Homes settle and window frames of any material can crack. If your windows appear to be the source of the water, talk to your local window replacement company about new windows. Replacement windows, when installed properly, will do their job better than older windows. Not only will they keep the water out but they’ll help with your heating and cooling costs.
