Some of the large national replacement window companies talk about their windows as if they’re the only windows that you should consider. However, after having conversation with many homeowners who’ve called us after a national company has given their presentation, we’ve learned some things that they do that we don’t agree with. We want to help you understand some things you should know before buying replacement windows.

Higher Price Doesn’t Necessarily Mean a Better Window

The National Fenestration Rating Council rates the efficiency of all windows independently. That means if one window has a U-Factor of .35 and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient of .32 and another window has the same rating, they have essentially the same energy efficiency. Often with national branded windows, you’re paying for the name.

Don’t Buy More Than You Need

Some replacement window companies will oversell you on the ratings. Yes, they are important to pay attention to, however, buying more than you need won’t help. That means if you find a double-pane replacement window with the recommended ratings for the region (which can be found here), a triple-pane widow with the same rating won’t benefit you, it will only cost you more. The same goes for the fill between the panes of glass.

Beware of Costly Options

Just like options on a car, some are necessary, others are nice to have, and some are completely unnecessary. For example, you may have an incredible view so a fine mesh screen may be an upgrade you want to pay for, however, if you keep your blinds drawn for privacy most of the time, it’s not worth the money for that option. Know what options are important to you. Don’t be misled into over spending on the unnecessary by replacement window companies who make the most profit on those options.

Understand Window Styles

Before you choose your windows, understand window styles and the different options that come with them. For example, although a double hung window is more expensive than a single hung window, you may find that the ease of cleaning and the ability to open the window from the top down is a feature worth paying for. If an unobstructed view is important to you, casement windows are worth the increased cost. You need to understand the differences before spending more on the wrong window style for your home.
