How to Choose the Right Siding and Window Company – Part 1

Whether you’re looking for a siding and window company for an exterior makeover or just new windows or new siding, here are some tips that will help you choose the right company. Window replacement is a big business and there are many companies out there trying to get in on the billion’s homeowners spend every year to replace their windows. Not all sell quality products and fewer install them properly. Add new siding to the mix and there are even fewer quality companies who provide both services.

Research

It wasn’t that long ago that the only ways to research a company were to look them up in the yellow pages, ask friends and neighbors and call the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Today your options are almost too numerous. Talking to neighbors is still a great resource. The BBB is still a great way to learn about the standing of a business in the community but not the only place you should go when looking for a siding and window company.

Check out their reviews in non-biased sites like Google and Facebook and others. These sites don’t allow the company to take down a bad review just because its bad. They can respond to the review and sometimes that response tells you more about the company than the fact that they made a mistake. Remember, you can’t please all the people all the time so it’s virtually impossible to have a true five-star rating.

Interview

Once you’ve found a handful of companies you think you’d like to speak with, reach out to them. Pay attention to how and when they return your call. Are they professional and focused on you or are they supervising a crew in the field? This can tell you a lot about a siding and window company. A good company will return your call within one business day and set an appointment that suits your schedule. Never consider a company who says they’ll drive by or look on Google street view and provide you a quote.

Now that you have your appointments set up, you’ll want to treat the estimate like a job interview. After all, they’ll be working for you and you’re the boss. Here are some things to pay attention to as you meet with each company:

  • Did they show up (or at least call) when promised?
  • Do they listen to what you’d like for your new siding and windows?
  • Is their explanation of their products clear and concise?
  • Do they offer suggestions or push you to one product or another?

Hopefully the companies you met with has indicated they’ll get back to you in a few days with a written proposal.
