If you’re like most of us, you’ve spent the last month or so looking out your windows. As pollen season begins to wrap up, we may have realized that the view out those windows isn’t as clear as it once was. You don’t have to dread window cleaning as there are some simple ways to have streak free windows.

Invest in Good Tools

The two tools we recommend are a quality squeegee and a good microfiber towel. A good squeegee is one with a replaceable blade. It’s worth investing in it if you plan on cleaning your windows yourself. A good one does a better job and lasts longer than the plastic one you might have now. A dull squeegee blade is as useless as a dull knife. Find a lint and dust free microfiber towel. If you plan on cleaning your outside windows and need a ladder, remember, you don’t want to stand on the top step or rung so plan accordingly with your purchase. You’ll also want two spray bottles.

Make the Right Solution

Yes, there are many commercially available “window cleaners” but have you ever found one that doesn’t leave streaks? One of the best window cleaning solutions is good old water, dish soap and vinegar. A good starting point, depending on the size of your spray bottle, is four cups water, 2 cups vinegar and a few drops of dish soap. Put your mixture in spray bottle.

Start Cleaning

  1. Spray the vinegar/water/soap mixture onto your window.
  2. Use your microfiber towel to wipe away any dirt or grime.
  3. Rinse with plain water from a separate spray bottle to avoid film build up.
  4. Use the squeegee to remove the excess water.
  5. With a different microfiber towel than in step two, wipe the window to remove any streaks.

One trick to remove stubborn streaks is an old fashion chalk board eraser. Use it on any remaining streaks!
